(TRYON, NC) - Advocates, enrollees and elected officials will celebrate the start of Medicaid expansion with an instructional event and press conference at 4:45 on Tuesday, December 12 at the Ridge Room in the International Pavilion of the Tryon International Equestrian Center & Resort (Tryon International).

The roster of speakers includes Sen. Kevin Corbin (R-NC 50), Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson, former NC Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker and a representative of the NC Department of Health and Human Services. These and other participants will explain the benefits of expansion and how to apply.

Medicaid expansion officially kicked off in North Carolina on December 1, following a decade-long grassroots advocacy campaign. At the forefront of that campaign has been Care4Carolina (C4C), the statewide nonpartisan coalition founded in 2012. C4C will host Tuesday’s event, and the location is no accident. Western NC played a critical role in building the political and business support necessary to close the state’s healthcare coverage gap.

“Medicaid expansion happened because so many everyday people, elected officials, businesses, community organizations recognized its potential and poured their hearts into supporting it – and nowhere was that effort more potent than in Western, NC,” says C4C Executive Director Abby Emanuelson. “Six hundred thousand North Carolinians now have access to affordable healthcare. That wouldn’t be the case without Western NC.”

Advocates continue to work on the grassroots level to educate potential expansion enrollees as to how to apply. C4C recently kicked off a statewide advertising campaign with Curtis Media to raise enrollment awareness.
