Mill Spring, NC - October 24, 2023 - Saturday Night Lights presented by Tryon Horse & Home hosted 60 entries under the lights in Tryon Stadium for the $146,000 Coca-Cola Grand Prix CSI 3*, with Gonzalo Busca Roca (ESP) riding Classified to victory in a time of 38.65 seconds in jump-off competition. Luiz Francisco De Azevedo (BRA) and Collin, the 2007 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Colandro x Amethist), sped through the timers in a time of 38.96 seconds to earn reserve honors. Rounding out the podium, Aaron Vale (USA) and Carissimo 25, the 2013 Holsteiner gelding (Cascadello x Clinton), posted a time of 39.17 seconds for third place. There were 12 clear rounds powered by Stuller Power Solutions in the first round, with seven of those riders also posting double-clear performances.

Course designer Oscar Soberon (USA) crafted a winding opening track for the 47 horse-and-rider combinations. Roca and the 2014 Irish Sport Horse gelding (Je T’aime Flamenco x Unknown) were third to test the opening track.

“The first round was quite tough. When we walked the course we were all thinking that it was a tough course. I went early, so I didn’t know how tight the time was going to be, and I just tried to be efficient. I had a good plan for all the lines, and the horse jumped great,” recalled Roca.

In the jump-off, Roca and Classified were once again the pathfinders, and flew through the course without knocking any rails down. “I was first to go with 12 riders in the jump off, and the fastest riders, they were all there,” said Roca. “I tried to go as fast as I could. The first part of the jump-off had more turning than galloping, so I tried to turn as quickly as I could and then I galloped at the end.”

Of the 11 riders that followed, Luiz Francisco De Azevedo came the closest, while Aaron Vale settled for third to round out the podium. “There were super fast riders all in the same second, so it could have gone one way or the other,” commented Roca.

William Antigua was presented the Groom’s Award presented by Ariat for his care and dedication to Classified, alongside Tryon International’s Drew Page.

Following his win, Classified will get a well-deserved break from competition, while Roca will continue competing his other mounts. “Classified is going to leave next week,” said Roca. “He’s going to have three weeks off and then will probably jump the three star in November in Wellington. I’ll jump other horses here next week.”

As the highest placing female rider in the Grand Prix, Alison Robitaille was awarded the Leading Lady Award presented by Marthaler Jewelers, alongside Tryon International’s Director of Development, Lynn Penny.

Roca shared that Tryon has become a staple in his show calendar over the years. “I like coming to Tryon; the experience has been very good. I come a few weeks every year,  and I was here this past spring and summer. Every time I come I really like it here, and the horses jump very well.”

Jordan Lubow and Wisely are Winners of $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby presented by The Farm House

October 20, 2023 - Jordan Lubow (Mobile, AL) and Wisely were the winning combination in Friday afternoon’s $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby presented by The Farm House, scoring 360 points over two rounds to clinch the win. Fabian Herrera (Charlotte, NC) and Accelerator, the 2012 Warmblood gelding (Accelerator x Bazylia), earned reserve honors with 339 points, while third place belonged to Alicia Wilkinson (Charlotte, NC) and Didi Blue, the 2017 Westphalian gelding (Diamant De Semilly x Jung Lady Ship), for their 330-point performance.

Lubow and the 2009 Oldenburg gelding (Casiro I x Hauptstutbuch Fabaletta) received a score of 182 in the first round, giving them the leading edge walking into the handy round. She rode Wisely to a score of 180 in the handy round to confirm her lead. “First of all, the course was absolutely beautiful. I liked that in a big field like that there was nothing related so you could really take your time and show off your horse. My plan for the first round was to just go around and make him look as beautiful as possible and he laid down a really nice trip.”

Lubow continued, saying, “I had such a big lead going into the handy and the high options were no joke today, so my plan there was to do a some tighter role back to one but do the low option and then also do the role back to the far white vertical and do the low option there as well. I wanted to play it safe, but also show off more of the tighter turns and show his handiness.”

With her goals set on qualifying for next year’s Derby Finals, Lubow hopes to continue competing with Wisely at the International Derby level. “He’s owned by Valerie Kalderon of Opening Bell Sporthorses and Lisa Williams. I’m so appreciative to have the ride on him. He wasn’t able to do Derby Finals last year, but we’re hoping to get him qualified for next year’s finals.”

Young Talent Shines in Developing Jumper Series Championships Presented by Spy Coast Farm

October 21, 2023 - The Developing Jumper Series (DJS) Championship presented by Spy Coast Farm concluded on Saturday in the Tryon Stadium. Competition started on Wednesday in the International Stadium, and continued on Thursday in the Tryon Stadium. Riders who had been clear in all three rounds jumped-off to decide the final placings.

The 5-Year-Old DJS Championship presented by Spy Coast Farm went to Aaron Vale (Williston, FL) and Redfield Farm’s Nimbus RFB, a 2018 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Kannan x Fiene). The duo placed three clear rounds, as well as a clear jump-off with a fast time of 33.992 seconds. In second place was Conor O’Regan (Upperville, VA) piloting Dynomite Ranch’s 2018 Thoroughbred mare (Emerald x Umbra 34), Sabine DR, who stayed clear throughout the competition with a jump-off time of 35.872 seconds. Rounding out the top three was Riley Delbecq (Duck Key, FL) and Nelson S, a 2018 Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Springtown Show Stable, who also produced all three rounds with a jump-off time of 37.477 seconds.

“He [Nimbus RFB] is a very talented horse,” commented Vale. “I saw him at Devon, and he showed a lot of talent, so I convinced the owners to do a partnership with me. He has all the things you want in a top horse; he’s light and quick, is scopey, and has great technique over the fences. I have very high hopes for him, and I think he’s going to do big things in the future.”

Vale continued, sharing his thoughts on the Developing Jumper Series Finals and on the importance of developing young horses, saying: “My horse Elusive came up through the series, I bought him as a six year old and he was second in the six-year-old finals and won the seven-year-old finals and he has won over a million dollars in prize money.

“Top horses are almost unbuyable, so for most people the only way to compete and continue competing at the top level is to find young talent and produce it up through the ranks,” he concluded. “It’s amazing that there’s an end of year final here in Tryon where you can set a goal for you and your horse, prepare the horse for three days of competition, and get experience competing in a big ring like the Tryon Stadium.”
